Apple Unveils ‘Apple Intelligence’: AI Goodness in Developer Beta of iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1

In a twist straight out of a tech thriller, Apple is rolling out its AI bonanza, dubbed “Apple Intelligence,” with the first developer beta of iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1.

Now, you might be scratching your head because iOS 18 hasn’t officially hit the streets yet. But hey, with the AI tsunami set to revamp everything, Apple’s giving itself and developers a head start on the action.

The developer beta already boasts some shiny new features flaunted at this year’s WWDC, although the full shebang isn’t here just yet. Word on the street (and by street, we mean leaks) is that the grand reveal is slated for the first half of 2025.

So, what’s on the menu? Users can now tinker with writing aids that can rephrase, proofread, and summarize texts across Apple’s apps and most third-party ones. Goodbye typos, hello polished prose!

Siri’s got a makeover too. She’s all dressed up with a new look and a nifty trick of seamlessly swapping between voice and text inputs while keeping up with your ever-changing demands.

Other nifty features include automatic call recording and transcription (for those who never want to miss a detail), email prioritization and summarization (because inbox zero is life), and a natural language photo search that might finally help you find that screenshot of the funny cat meme from three months ago.

But wait, there’s more… or not quite yet. Some promised goodies like ChatGPT integration, Genmoji, and image creation haven’t made it to this beta party. Also, the EU’s got a bit of regulatory rain on the parade, so no Apple Intelligence features there just yet.

Even if you’re one of the brave souls installing this early, slightly wobbly developer beta, don’t expect to dive into the AI magic instantly. Parts of Apple Intelligence are chilling in a “private cloud,” and you’ll need to snag a spot on a waiting list due to server demands. Oh, and you’ll need an iPhone 15 Pro, an iPad with M1 or later, or a Mac with M1 or later. No pressure.

Early Performance Reports

Early bird reports are in, and here’s the scoop: while Apple Intelligence isn’t winning any speed races, it’s pretty darn efficient. Slow and steady wins the race, right?

Some have noted that the AI system is a power-sipper, using a max of 6 watts for rephrasing and just 1-2 watts for email summaries. It even handles longer texts of around 1,000 words like a champ.

And Siri? She’s strutting her stuff with a futuristic glow around the screen when summoned, though her actual responses haven’t gotten any earth-shattering updates—yet.

So, buckle up, folks. Apple’s dipping its toes into the AI waters, and it looks like there’s a whole lot more to come. Stay tuned for the full rollout and all the AI goodness set to make our digital lives a little more sci-fi and a lot more streamlined.
